Used Cars in Johor — JB, Skudai & Iskandar Buying Guide
· Roda Editorial · Updated
Johor's used car market is centred on Johor Bahru and the growing towns around it, Skudai, Iskandar Puteri, Kulai and Pasir Gudang, with other markets in Batu Pahat, Muar, Kluang and Segamat. Many Johor cars are used for long highway trips, and some cross into Singapore every day. This guide covers how to search the state, what to check that is specific to Johor, and how to complete the purchase.
Where to look
- Open used cars in Johor and add the model, price range and year you want.
- Check the town in each ad. A car in Batu Pahat or Muar may be a long drive from Johor Bahru, so plan viewings by area.
- If you live in the north of the state, include Melaka and Negeri Sembilan in your search.
- Save the search and shortlist three to five cars before you arrange viewings.
Cars used for Singapore trips
Some Johor cars are used to drive into Singapore. These cars can rack up mileage on the Causeway and Second Link routes and spend long periods idling in queues. That is not a reason to avoid them, but ask:
- How often the car went to Singapore, and for how long.
- Whether the service record reflects the mileage.
- About the Autopass card. Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) says an Autopass card is tied to the vehicle's particulars and cannot be passed on to another vehicle. If you plan to drive into Singapore, check LTA's website for the steps to register the car under your own details after the transfer.
Long queues in hot weather are hard on the cooling system and the air-conditioning. Test both on a long drive.
Check for flood damage
Parts of Johor flood regularly during the monsoon season. In March 2023, floods hit several districts, with Batu Pahat and Segamat among the worst affected. Flood-damaged cars can be cleaned and sold without the buyer being told. Look for:
- A damp or musty smell, or a heavy air freshener.
- Silt or water marks under the carpets, under the seats and in the spare tyre well.
- Rust on seat rails, seat belt anchors and screws under the dashboard.
- Moisture or water lines inside the headlamps and tail lamps.
- Electrical faults with windows, locks, the infotainment system or warning lights.
Ask the seller directly, and ask the inspector to look for flood signs.
High-mileage highway cars
Johor's towns are spread out, and many owners drive long distances on the North–South Expressway. Highway mileage is usually easier on a car than the same distance in city traffic, but it still wears the suspension, tyres and wheel bearings. On the test drive:
- Drive at highway speed and feel for vibration through the steering wheel.
- Listen for a humming noise that changes with speed, which can mean a worn wheel bearing.
- Check that the car tracks straight when you loosen your grip on the steering wheel.
- Look for stone chips on the bonnet and cracks in the windscreen.
Inspection and transfer
Get a condition check before you pay the balance, from PUSPAKOM's voluntary inspection or a workshop you choose. For cars, the JPJ transfer also needs an MV15 inspection report, which checks the vehicle's identity. Check PUSPAKOM's website for the centre nearest you and for booking. Our PUSPAKOM inspection guide explains the inspection types.
The ownership transfer is done through JPJ, with an identity check for both buyer and seller. The JPJ ownership transfer guide lists the steps and documents.
Before you pay in full:
- Match the chassis and engine numbers with the registration record.
- Confirm that any loan has been settled, or agree in writing how your payment settles it.
- Check for outstanding summonses or a blacklist that could block the transfer.
- Pay the balance when the transfer is ready.
Popular choices in the south
Johor buyers look at the same models as the rest of Peninsular Malaysia: national cars for daily use, Japanese sedans and MPVs for families, and pickups for work and outstation trips. If you are considering a pickup, read our used Toyota Hilux guide.
After you buy
Book the first service with a workshop near you. Browse workshops in Johor on Roda, and check tyre shops if the tyres are worn from highway use.
