5 Tips to Sell Your Car Faster in Malaysia
· Roda Editorial · Updated
A used car that sits unsold for weeks usually has one of three problems: the price is above what similar cars are listed for, the photos are poor, or the seller is slow to reply. All three are in your control. These five steps cover what to do before you post, while the ad is live, and on the day you hand over the keys.
1. Price it against real ads
Your price should come from what buyers can see today, not from what you paid or what you still owe the bank.
- Search used cars on Roda for the same model, and narrow it to the same generation and variant.
- Note the asking prices of cars within a year or two of yours and with similar mileage.
- Adjust for what makes yours different: service records, a recent tyre or battery change, accident repairs, or high mileage.
- Leave a small margin for negotiation, but keep the price believable. Ads with prices far below the market look like scams to buyers, and ads far above the market get skipped.
If you need a quick sale, price slightly below the cars that compare closely with yours and say so in the description.
2. Make the ad complete
Buyers filter and compare. An ad with missing details drops out of their shortlist.
- Basics: year of manufacture, year of registration, variant, transmission, engine size and colour.
- Mileage: the real figure on the odometer, with a photo of the instrument cluster.
- History: service records, number of owners if you know it, and any accident repairs.
- Loan status: say clearly whether the car is fully paid or still under a hire purchase loan.
- Recent work: tyres, battery, brake pads or a major service done in the past year.
Write the description in plain sentences. Avoid "call for details": many buyers will move to the next ad instead.
3. Take photos that answer questions
Twelve to twenty clear photos taken in soft daylight do more than any description. Shoot all four corners, the dashboard with the engine running, the seats, the boot, the engine bay and each tyre. Include close-ups of any scratches or dents. Our car photography guide has a full shot list.
Never post the geran (registration card), your IC or bank documents in the ad. Show them in person to a serious buyer.
4. Reply fast and handle viewings safely
Buyers often contact several sellers at once, so a quick reply matters. Keep notifications on for chat and WhatsApp while the ad is live, and reply within the same day.
For viewings:
- Meet in daylight at a public place or at your home with someone else present.
- Ask for the buyer's name and IC before a test drive, and ride along.
- Keep the spare key with you until payment is complete.
- Expect serious buyers to ask for an inspection. Agree on a time at a PUSPAKOM centre or a workshop of their choice. See what a PUSPAKOM inspection covers.
5. Have the paperwork ready before you post
A car that can be transferred the same week sells faster than one that needs a month of paperwork.
- Find the geran, or the digital registration record if your car uses one, and make sure your details are correct.
- Check that there are no outstanding JPJ or PDRM summonses or a blacklist on your name or the vehicle, because they can stop the transfer.
- If the car is under a loan, ask your bank for a settlement statement. The buyer's payment, or their bank's loan, settles your balance before ownership moves. Read how to sell a car with an outstanding loan.
- For a car, plan the MV15 inspection (formerly called B5), which the JPJ transfer needs. The report is valid for a limited time, so book it close to the sale.
- Agree with the buyer in writing on the price, the deposit, who pays which fees and the handover date.
Hand over the car only after the JPJ ownership transfer is complete and the full payment has cleared in your account. Until the transfer is complete, the car is still legally yours, including any summons it collects.
After the sale
When the car is sold, mark the ad as sold in My ads so buyers stop contacting you. Ask your insurer how to cancel the policy and keep your no claim discount for your next car, and keep a copy of the sale agreement and the transfer slip.
Quick checklist
- Price compared with at least five similar ads
- Year, variant, mileage, history and loan status stated
- Twelve or more daylight photos, flaws included
- Geran, IC and settlement statement ready
- Summons and blacklist checked
- Transfer done before the keys are handed over
Post your car on Roda when the list is done.
