Used Toyota Hilux Malaysia — Workhorse Pickup Buying Guide
· Roda Editorial · Updated
The Toyota Hilux is a pickup used for everything from site work and plantation runs to family trips and off-road weekends. That range of uses is exactly why a used Hilux needs careful checking: two trucks of the same year and mileage can have lived very different lives. This guide covers the generations, engines, Toyota's warranty for the Hilux, and what to check, including the paperwork that applies to commercial and fleet trucks.
Generations at a glance
Based on paultan.org's model history:
- 2011: facelift of the seventh-generation Hilux.
- May 2016: eighth-generation Hilux, known as the Revo, launched in Malaysia.
- 2018 and 2020: facelifts of the eighth generation.
Check the year of manufacture and registration on the registration record, not only in the ad.
Engines and gearboxes
The current Hilux diesels listed on UMW Toyota's site, as of October 2026:
- 2.4-litre (2GD-FTV, 2,393 cc): 150 PS and 400 Nm, with a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual.
- 2.8-litre (1GD-FTV, 2,755 cc): 204 PS and 500 Nm, with a six-speed automatic.
Variants differ in cab type (single or double cab), two- or four-wheel drive, and equipment. Confirm the variant on the registration record and by checking the truck itself.
Warranty
According to UMW Toyota's warranty page, as of October 2026:
- The Hilux has a 5-year or 150,000 km warranty, whichever comes first. This differs from the 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty on Toyota's passenger cars.
- Vehicles used commercially or converted have separate, shorter cover. Check how the truck was registered and used.
- Servicing on schedule at a UMW Toyota service centre or appointed dealer is required.
- UMW Toyota says the warranty is fully transferable to subsequent owners.
UMW Toyota's periodic maintenance page lists every 10,000 km or 6 months for normal use, and every 5,000 km or 3 months for severe conditions. Towing, heavy loads and dusty roads can count as severe; check the booklet.
Private or commercial registration
Ask how the truck is registered. A pickup registered as a commercial goods vehicle has different obligations from a private one:
- PUSPAKOM lists routine inspections for commercial vehicles every six months, under the Road Transport Act 1987.
- Commercial vehicles may need a permit, depending on what they carry and for whom. Check with APAD and JPJ before you buy.
- Road tax and insurance differ by category.
Ask for the inspection history of a commercial truck. Gaps can mean it was off the road, or that the paperwork was not kept up.
What to check on a used Hilux
Paperwork
- The name on the registration record matches the seller's IC, or the company documents for a company-owned truck.
- The chassis and engine numbers match the record.
- Any loan will be settled at transfer. See how to sell a car with an outstanding loan.
- No outstanding summonses or blacklist.
How it was used
- Fleet and company trucks may have high mileage and several drivers. Ask for the fleet's service records.
- Off-road trucks may have lift kits, larger tyres, snorkels, bull bars and winches. Ask what has been fitted, whether it is approved, and whether the original parts come with the truck.
- Towing: a worn tow hitch or wiring suggests regular towing. Check the clutch on manuals and gearbox behaviour on automatics.
Engine
- Start from cold. Listen for knocks and check for excessive smoke.
- Look for oil leaks around the engine and turbo.
- Check the service history for oil and fuel filter changes. Diesel engines are sensitive to fuel quality and filter changes.
Four-wheel drive
- Engage four-wheel drive, high and low range, during the test drive on a suitable surface, and check that the indicator lights respond.
- Listen for clunks from the transfer case and differentials.
- Turn at full lock slowly in both directions and listen for clicking from the front driveshafts.
Underbody and tub
- Look under the truck for dents in the sump guard, bent suspension parts and rust on the chassis.
- Check for dried mud deep in the chassis rails and under the carpets, which can mean river crossings or flood damage.
- Check the rear tub for heavy dents and the leaf springs for sagging.
Cabin and electrics
- Test the air-conditioning in traffic.
- Check all lights, including any added light bars, and that the wiring is tidy.
- Test the infotainment, cameras and driver assistance features fitted to that variant.
Inspection and transfer
Book an independent inspection before you pay the balance. For a private pickup, the JPJ ownership transfer needs the MV15 inspection. See our PUSPAKOM inspection guide and JPJ ownership transfer guide.
Recalls
UMW Toyota's special service campaign page has a chassis number check. Run it before you buy, and ask for proof that open campaigns were completed.
