Used Honda HR-V in Malaysia — Space, Reliability & Prices
· Roda Editorial · Updated
The Honda HR-V is a compact SUV that Honda Malaysia has sold in two generations since 2015, with petrol, turbo and hybrid versions. The two generations differ in engines, size and equipment, so it helps to know which one you are looking at. This guide covers the generations, Honda's warranty terms, the hybrid battery warranty, and what to check on a used HR-V.
Generations at a glance
Based on Honda Malaysia's press releases and paultan.org:
- First generation, RU (February 2015): facelifted in 2019.
- Second generation, RV (July 2022): facelifted in July 2025. The current HR-V.
Engines and gearboxes
- First generation (RU): a 1.8-litre i-VTEC with a CVT, according to Honda Malaysia's launch release. A hybrid version with Honda's earlier i-DCD system was also sold.
- Second generation (RV), according to Honda Malaysia's current specifications:
- S variant: 1.5-litre i-VTEC with a CVT.
- E and V variants: 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo rated at 181 PS and 240 Nm, with a CVT.
- e:HEV RS: Honda's two-motor e:HEV hybrid with an e-CVT.
Road tax depends on engine capacity under JPJ's rate guide, so a 1.8-litre first-generation car and a 1.5-litre second-generation car are in different bands. See road tax renewal online.
Warranty
As of October 2026, according to Honda Malaysia's official pages:
- New Hondas have a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty.
- Preventive maintenance must follow Honda's schedule at a Honda authorised dealer. Servicing elsewhere can void the warranty, and non-genuine parts can affect coverage.
- The warranty is transferable if the car is still under warranty when it is sold.
A second-generation HR-V may still be within the 5-year warranty. First-generation cars are out of the standard warranty, so the service history and an independent inspection matter more.
Hybrid battery warranty
From 1 May 2026, Honda Malaysia gives a 10-year, unlimited mileage warranty on hybrid batteries. Its announcement says this covers existing e:HEV owners and the older i-DCD Jazz, City and HR-V hybrids, and that subsequent owners remain eligible up to year 10. Check the conditions with Honda before you buy a used hybrid HR-V.
Recalls and product updates
Honda Malaysia has an online check by chassis number for product updates, including airbag replacement campaigns. Run it for any used HR-V and ask for proof that open campaigns were completed.
What to check on a used HR-V
Paperwork
- The name on the registration record matches the seller's IC.
- The chassis and engine numbers match the record.
- Any loan will be settled at transfer. See how to sell a car with an outstanding loan.
- No outstanding summonses or blacklist.
Drivetrain
- CVT models: pull away gently and firmly. There should be no judder, slipping or whining. Ask whether the CVT fluid was changed according to Honda's schedule.
- Turbo models: accelerate firmly in a safe place and check that power builds smoothly with no warning lights.
- i-DCD hybrid (first generation): this system uses a dual-clutch gearbox with an electric motor. Pull away gently in traffic and on a slope, and check for jerky engagement or warning messages.
- e:HEV (second generation): check for hybrid system warnings, and ask for a battery health check at an authorised dealer.
Body and interior
- Check the rear seats and their folding mechanism, and the boot floor, if you need the space.
- Look for repainted panels, scraped bumpers and kerbed rims.
- Test the air-conditioning in traffic for at least fifteen minutes.
- Test the infotainment, cameras and driver assistance features fitted to that variant.
Flood signs
Look for silt or water marks under the carpets, in the boot and under the seats.
Inspection and transfer
Book an independent inspection before you pay the balance, and complete the MV15 inspection for the transfer. See our PUSPAKOM inspection guide and JPJ ownership transfer guide.
Certified option
Honda Malaysia's Honda Certified Used Car programme, announced in 2022, lists a 288-point check, cars up to 5 years old and 100,000 km, and one year of extended warranty in its launch release. Check the current terms. See certified pre-owned cars.
Compare
Compare the Proton X50 and the Perodua Ativa if you are shopping for a compact SUV, and read the hybrid guide before you choose an e:HEV.
