Road Tax Renewal Online Malaysia — MyJPJ & Insurance Steps
· Roda Editorial · Updated
Road tax, officially the motor vehicle licence (Lesen Kenderaan Motor, LKM), must be valid whenever your vehicle is on the road. For most private car and motorcycle owners, renewal is now done online in a few minutes. This guide covers what you need before you renew, the channels JPJ offers, what has changed with digital road tax, and the common reasons a renewal fails.
Procedures and fees change. This guide reflects JPJ information as of October 2026. Check JPJ's official channels before you renew.
Before you renew
Make sure these are in place:
- Valid insurance. You cannot renew road tax without motor insurance covering the vehicle. Renew your insurance first. See our car insurance renewal guide.
- Within the renewal window. JPJ's MyJPJ FAQ says road tax can be renewed no earlier than two months before it expires.
- No JPJ restriction. A blacklist or other restriction on the owner or the vehicle, for example for unpaid summonses, blocks renewal. Check and settle summonses first.
- Inspection, if the road tax has lapsed for a long time. JPJ's FAQ says a vehicle whose road tax expired more than three years ago needs a PUSPAKOM inspection report before renewal.
Ways to renew
JPJ lists these channels for road tax renewal, as of October 2026:
- MyJPJ app, for private and e-hailing vehicles.
- JPJ public portal, for private and e-hailing vehicles.
- JPJ kiosks, for private vehicles.
- JPJ counters and mobile counters.
- Post offices, for private vehicles.
- PUSPAKOM, for some categories.
JPJ adds and removes collection agents from time to time. If you use a third-party service, check that it is currently listed by JPJ.
Renewing in the MyJPJ app
- Download MyJPJ from the official app store and log in with your MySIKAP account.
- Make sure your insurance renewal has been recorded. Insurers send the policy details to JPJ electronically; if the app does not show the new policy, wait or ask your insurer.
- Choose the vehicle and the renewal period offered, usually six or twelve months.
- Pay online. The new road tax appears in the app.
Keep the payment receipt until you see the new expiry date in the app.
Digital road tax and no sticker
Since 10 February 2023, Malaysian-owned private vehicles registered to individuals, including motorcycles, no longer need to display a road tax sticker on the windscreen. The road tax is shown digitally in the MyJPJ app. From 1 February 2026, printed road tax slips stopped for these vehicles.
Vehicles owned by companies or non-citizens, and some commercial vehicles, may still use a printed road tax. Check with JPJ for your vehicle's category.
Your driving licence is also available in digital form in MyJPJ.
How much is road tax?
The amount depends on the vehicle:
- Petrol and diesel cars: based on engine capacity, and whether the car is a saloon or another body type such as an MPV, SUV or pickup. Rates rise steeply above 1,600 cc.
- Motorcycles: based on engine capacity.
- Electric vehicles: from 1 January 2026, based on the motor's power output in kW, under a structure announced in 2024.
- Region: rates in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan differ from Peninsular Malaysia.
JPJ publishes the calculation guide. Car and motorcycle ads on Roda show a road tax estimate based on that guide for privately owned petrol and diesel vehicles, which helps when you compare used cars. The amount you pay at renewal is the one JPJ shows.
Common problems
- "Insurance not found": the insurer has not yet sent the new policy to JPJ, or the vehicle details do not match. Ask your insurer.
- Blacklist or restriction: settle outstanding summonses. JPJ summonses can be checked and paid in MyJPJ, on the JPJ portal, at kiosks and at counters. PDRM summonses can be checked and paid through MyBayar PDRM.
- Too early: wait until you are within the renewal window.
- Company-owned vehicle: some online channels are for individual owners only. Use a channel that accepts company vehicles.
- Long-expired road tax: book the required inspection first.
Penalties
Using a vehicle on the road without valid road tax or insurance is an offence. JPJ and PDRM's compound tiers introduced on 1 January 2026, with discounts for early payment, do not apply to these offences, so they can go to court. Set a reminder a few weeks before your road tax expires.
Buying or selling a used vehicle
When you buy a used car, check the road tax expiry in the ad or ask the seller, and budget for renewal. Valid road tax is also required for an online ownership transfer. See the JPJ ownership transfer guide and browse used cars on Roda.
