Used Cars in Penang — Island & Mainland Buying Guide
· Roda Editorial · Updated
Penang is two markets in one. On the island, around George Town, Bayan Lepas and Air Itam, roads are narrow, parking is tight and small cars are popular. On the mainland, in Seberang Perai around Butterworth, Bukit Mertajam and Nibong Tebal, buyers have more space and more choice of larger cars and pickups. The two are linked by two bridges and a ferry, so a car on the other side is never far away. This guide covers how to search both sides, what to check in a coastal state, and how to finish the purchase.
Search both sides of the channel
- Open used cars in Penang and add the model, price range and year you want.
- Look at the city or area in each ad. An island car and a mainland car of the same model and year can be priced differently.
- If you live on the mainland, include nearby states. Kedah and Perak are within driving distance from Seberang Perai.
- Save the search, and shortlist three to five cars before you arrange viewings.
Island cars and mainland cars
Neither is better by default, but the way a car has been used shows in its condition.
- Island cars often do short trips in slow traffic. Mileage may be low, but short trips are hard on the battery, brakes and engine oil. Check for scrapes on bumpers and kerbed rims from tight parking.
- Mainland cars often do longer highway trips, so mileage may be higher, but the engine and gearbox may have had an easier life. Check tyre wear and stone chips on the bonnet and windscreen.
In both cases, the service record tells you more than the mileage alone.
Check for corrosion
Penang is surrounded by sea, and many cars are parked near the coast. Salt air speeds up rust, especially on cars that are rarely washed underneath.
- Look under the car at the sills, the floor pan, the subframes and the exhaust.
- Open the doors, bonnet and boot and check the edges and the seams.
- Lift the boot floor and check the spare tyre well for rust or water.
- Check the brake discs and calipers. Heavy rust on the discs of a car that is used daily can mean the brakes need work.
Surface rust on the exhaust is normal. Bubbling paint on body panels, or rust you can push a finger into, is not.
Check for flood damage
Low-lying parts of the island and the mainland flood during heavy rain. Ask the seller directly whether the car has been in a flood, and check for:
- A damp smell, or silt and water marks under the carpets and in the spare tyre well.
- Rust on seat rails and screws under the dashboard.
- Moisture inside the headlamps or tail lamps.
- Electrical faults with windows, locks or the infotainment system.
Viewing and test drive
- View in daylight, and start the engine from cold.
- On the island, include a hill road if you can, such as the roads around Air Itam, to test the gearbox and brakes under load.
- On the mainland, include a stretch of highway to check for vibration at speed.
- Test the air-conditioning in traffic for at least fifteen minutes.
Inspection and transfer
Get a condition check before you pay the balance, from PUSPAKOM's voluntary inspection or a workshop you choose. For cars, the JPJ transfer also needs an MV15 inspection report, which checks the vehicle's identity. Check PUSPAKOM's website for the centre nearest you and for booking. Our PUSPAKOM inspection guide explains the inspection types.
The ownership transfer is done through JPJ. See the JPJ ownership transfer guide for what to bring and how the identity check works.
Before you pay in full:
- Match the chassis and engine numbers on the car with the registration record.
- Confirm any loan has been settled, or agree in writing how your payment settles it.
- Make sure there is no outstanding summons or blacklist that could block the transfer.
- Pay the balance when the transfer is ready.
Buying from outside Penang
If the right car is in another state, you can still buy it. Ask the seller for a video call walk-around first, then travel for the viewing and inspection. Do not pay a deposit for a car you have not seen. Our guide to WhatsApp scams when buying cars lists the warning signs.
After you buy
Book the first service at a workshop you choose. Browse workshops in Penang on Roda, and check the tyre shops if the tyres need replacing.
