Used Honda Civic in Malaysia — Generations & Buying Tips
· Roda Editorial · Updated
The Honda Civic is a C-segment sedan that Honda Malaysia has sold through several generations. On the used market you will mostly see the FB, FC and FE generations, with naturally aspirated, turbo and hybrid engines. Each generation has its own things to check. This guide explains the generations, what changed, Honda's warranty terms, and how to inspect a used Civic.
Generations on the used market
Based on Honda Malaysia's press releases and paultan.org's model history:
- FB (2012): ninth generation, facelifted in 2014.
- FC (June 2016): tenth generation, facelifted in 2020.
- FE (January 2022): eleventh generation, facelifted in 2025. The current Civic.
Ads sometimes use other codes, such as FK for the tenth-generation Civic Type R hatchback. Check the registration record to be sure which car you are looking at.
Engines and gearboxes
- FC (2016 to 2021): a 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo or a 1.8-litre i-VTEC, both with a CVT, according to Honda Malaysia's launch release.
- FE (2022 onwards): a 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo rated at 182 PS and 240 Nm with a CVT, and the 2.0-litre e:HEV RS hybrid with an e-CVT, according to Honda Malaysia's specifications.
The 1.8-litre and 1.5 turbo FC feel quite different. The turbo has more pulling power, and because road tax is based on engine capacity, the 1.5 turbo also pays less road tax than the 1.8 under JPJ's rate guide.
Warranty
As of October 2026, according to Honda Malaysia's official pages:
- New Hondas have a 5-year, unlimited mileage warranty.
- Preventive maintenance must follow Honda's schedule at a Honda authorised dealer. Servicing elsewhere can void the warranty, and non-genuine parts can affect coverage.
- The warranty is transferable if the car is still under warranty when it is sold.
- From 1 May 2026, hybrid batteries have a 10-year, unlimited mileage warranty, which Honda says also applies to existing e:HEV owners and subsequent owners up to year 10.
An FE Civic may still be within the 5-year warranty. FC and FB Civics are out of the standard warranty, so the service history and an independent inspection matter more.
Recalls and product updates
Honda Malaysia has an online check by chassis number for product updates, including airbag replacement campaigns. Run it for any used Civic, and ask the seller for proof that open campaigns were completed. This is especially important on older generations.
What to check on a used Civic
Paperwork
- The name on the registration record matches the seller's IC.
- The chassis and engine numbers match the record.
- Any loan will be settled at transfer.
- No outstanding summonses or blacklist.
Engine
- Start from cold. Listen for rattles and check for warning lights.
- On turbo models, accelerate firmly in a safe place. Power should build smoothly without hesitation.
- Look for oil leaks and check the oil level and condition.
- Ask for the oil change history. Turbo engines need oil changes on schedule with the right specification.
CVT
- Pull away gently and firmly. There should be no judder, slipping or whining.
- At steady speed, the engine speed should stay steady, not rise and fall.
- Ask whether the CVT fluid has been changed according to Honda's schedule.
Hybrid (FE e:HEV)
- Check that no hybrid system warnings show.
- Ask an authorised dealer for a battery health check, and confirm the hybrid battery warranty with Honda.
Body and suspension
- Some Civics have been modified. Check for lowered suspension, aftermarket rims, body kits and exhausts, and ask for the original parts. Modifications must still match the registration.
- Look for scraped bumpers and side skirts, and kerbed rims.
- Listen for knocks over speed bumps.
- Look for repainted panels and uneven gaps.
Interior and electrics
- Test the air-conditioning in traffic for at least fifteen minutes.
- Check the infotainment, cameras and driver assistance features fitted to that variant.
Flood signs
Look for silt or water marks under the carpets and in the boot.
Inspection and transfer
Book an independent inspection before you pay the balance, and complete the MV15 inspection for the transfer. See our PUSPAKOM inspection guide and JPJ ownership transfer guide.
Certified option
Honda Malaysia announced its Honda Certified Used Car programme in 2022. Its release lists a 288-point check, cars up to 5 years old and 100,000 km, and one year of extended warranty. Check Honda's current terms. See certified pre-owned cars.
